Science Objectives

PI: Raymond Schmitt

SPURS (Salinity Processes Upper-ocean Regional Study) is designed to improve our understanding of how the salinity maximum of the North Atlantic is maintained.  A variety of autonomous instruments will be deployed along with three moorings, and hydrographic and microstructure surveys performed.

- changed We will study a slow spreading system at Rainbow, TAG and Snake Pit in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We will obtain data and samples from ROV Jason II.

We will obtain water column samples from at least 3 CTD rosette casts.

Science Activities

PI: Raymond Schmitt

Deploy three surface moorings in the North Atlantic salinity maximum at 25N, 38 W.  Deploy floats, gliders and other AUV's.  Perfom microstructure and mixing measurements with free profilers.  Perform CTD casts and log underway thermosalinograph data in the region of the surface salinity maximum.

We requested Jason for our cruise and will use our in situ analyzer on it as we have on past cruises. Jason work will be the main effort. We need to have every Titanium sampler in the Jason and Alvin pool available for our cruise as our main work is to sample the hot vents at several MAR sites. I hope they are all  in good condition; if not, WHOI needs to request funds to insure that they are reliable. We will likely have a couple of biologists on the cruise, who will want to collect specimens, so freezers will be necessary including a -80 deg C freezer.

We will likely use elevators to bring some Titanium samplers aboard before the Jason comes aboard. Please budget steel weights for this purpose as well as have elevators and transponders available for us. Jason and Alvin have several elevators; if not, please budget for two new ones. I assume we would do between 4-6 elevator ops maximum during the cruise.

We also will use the Knorr's CTD/rosette system when Jason is not being used so wish to have a SSSG available to operate it for us so we can sample the water column. I assume this is normal for the Knorr as it is on the Atlantis for Alvin ops. In using the Melville and Thompson, we had help for CTD work. We hope to coordinate these sampling needs via our Jason work. A fume hood needs to be available for some of our chemical work.

We will have an outreach program on the cruise so will need to send data and communication back to the beach for a blog. We will likely send some large files back including photos, etc. Please budget for this.

We expect to ship our gear to the Knorr before it leaves WHOI, which should be no problem based on the present schedule. Please call me if you have any questions.
