Science Objectives

Our aim is to sample diverse segments of the mid-Atlantic ridge, largely between the Kane and Atlantis fracture zones, exploring the differences in the type and chemical compositions of rock collected from symmetirc segments as compared so assymmetric segments, where detachment faulting is taking place.

Science Activities

The activities will be largely rock sampling, both with dredging and "rock coring".  The rock coring takes place using the hydrowinch.  Dredging with the trawl winch.  We also want to take some gravity cores in the rift valley.THere will also be some multi-beam mapping.  This will always be important for sample location and documentation, but there will also be some short surveys where previous data are lacking.  Three days of survey time were proposed in the proposal.
