Science Objectives

To carry out the recovery and redeployment of the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Irminger Sea Array for 2016, servicing four moorings and up to four gliders.  The platforms will carry multidisciplinary instrumentation and provide the capability for real time communication of data and control of sampling.  A surface mooring will instrument the sea surface and upper ocean, capturing the surface forcing and upper ocean variability.  A profiling mooring will measure through the water column.  Two additional taut subsurface moorings and the gliders will complete the capabilities to obtain vertical profiles and sample the mesocale (10s to 100 km) variability at the site.

Regarding Radioactive Material - Steve Punshon Unv Vic:
"The source is in an electron capture detector in a GC.  It is a permanently sealed source and completely safe, as opposed to open sources, and poses no radiation risk in a regular lab environment.  I will be the only person authorised to operate the instrument.  The GC requires a 20 amp outlet (one of the live/neutral pins is rotated 90 degrees from the normal vertical orientation) and has a relatively short cord, about 6 ft.
