Science Objectives

1) document the extent of nanoparticulate pyrite, other metal sulfide nanoparticulate phases and other iron nanoparticulate phases emanating from hydrothermal vents and diffuse flow regimes.

2) document sulfide and iron oxidizing microbes in various parts of the ecosystem including on mats, basalts, etc.

3) dissolved manganese speciation in the water column

Science Activities

1. Sampling of hyrothermal vent fluids and plumes for chemistry and diffuse flow fluids for chemisry and for sulfide and iron oxidizing microbes
2. In situ voltammetry measurements using HOV Alvin
3. Samples will be analyzed aboard the Atlantis and processed for further analyses in the home laboratory.
4. Collection of different mat material and macrofauna; e.g., tubeworms, mussels, shrimp that may harbor sulfide and iron oxidizing microbes.
5. up to 4 CTD casts

we have 2 systems - one works with RS232, the other works as a network. Both were tested in 2014 on the Alvin science certification cruise.

The weights below are for the heaviest system.

We are also bringing plastic syringes for sampling waters and PVC tubes to collect shrimp.
