Science Activities

Hardware installation, sensor recovery

This is Anthony Kirincich's fuel cell that's to keep wind sensors operating while we're shut down.  The company that has hired WHOI to install these sensors wants no data interruptions (Dong Energy I think).  This fuel cell is simply a fancy battery charger that allows the sensors to run, store data, and send it back to WHOI via a cell modem.

The components are a box enclosure, 2 batteries, 2 5-gallon jugs of methanol, and a fuel cell that makes electricity to keep the batteries charged.

MVCO tower is equipped with a davit that can reach out over the railings for the small boat landing to the east and  north.  The north side railing has a chained gate to bring heavy gear through without having the clear the uppermost bannister.  We will use this north side to perform the lift.

Our davit is mechanical (old electric version never lasted).  It's equipped with a bracket for mounting a Harken 2-speed radial winch but we won't be using it for this job.  I have a 6-part purchase made specifically for this tower and gear transfers.  Two Harken triple blocks with 3" sheaves, each rated 3800-lbs working load.  This purchase allows for quick load transfers on a moving platform.  Purchase also equipped with a down-haul to operate the purchase with no load, opening the blocks basically.  Load divided by 6 is roughly the force required to perform the lift by the tower crew.  Two people on the tower will be performing the lift.

Boat backs down stern-to from the north to just under the railing.  Ship's crew takes the down-haul, brings the running block to the load.  Once attached, tower crew begin hauling immediately.  When at deck level, fuel cell is swung inside the railing.  Lift distance is 35 feet.

We will haul up the batteries and methanol jugs separately, enclosure last.  So actual weight of the enclosure will be less than 300 lbs.
