Science Objectives | |
The primary objectives of this research are to (a) characterize the biotic diversity of authigenic, methane-derived carbonates at Costa Rica seeps, from microbes to metazoans, (b) identify the ecosystem-scale interactions among these groups including habitat alteration, colonization, trophic transfer, (c) assess how proximity to methane seepage influences (a) and (b), define successional dynamics of carbonate ecosystems, (d) determine the evolutionary affinities of carbonate faunas and (e) refine our understanding of one of the most important paleoceanographic indicators, C. wuellerstorfi. Community components to be studied include associated megafauna, attached epifauna, endofauna (i.e. cryptofauna), and endolithofauna, as well as the biogeochemistry of carbonate environments experienced by these organisms. | |

Science Activities | |
(1A) Survey and map carbonate habitats at several locations with active and inactive seep sites on Hydrate Ridge (500-900 m) (1B) Recover carbonate rocks and associated faunas from the survey areas. Sample via manipulator, cold boxes, slurps, scoops. (2) Collect tube cores of bacterial mat, clam bed and other sediments (3) Place colonization experiments (carbonate, wood, chips, bones) for recovery in 2011 (4) Transplant carbonates to and from areas of active seepage (5) Generate CTD profiles, collect water from immediately over the seep (6) Examine OMZ waters (via CTD) and both OMZ and near seep sediments (via multicorer) during night ops (7) Generate multibeam maps for use in dive and elevator placement CO PIS: Rathburn, Orphan, Rouse Dive 1 -4 Hydrate Ridge North, 590 m 44 O 40.17’N, 125 O 5.89’W Additional Site 612 m, 44 40.03N 125 06.26W Dive 5 Hydrate Ridge South 770 m , 44 34.22 N 125 8.85 W Dive 6 Hydrate Ridge East 905 m , 44 34.36N 125 00.04W Dive 7-8 Hydrate Ridge North 590 m 44 O 40.17’N, 125 O 5.89’W
