Science Objectives

there are three groups coming out on this cruise.  for the Sylvan group, the objectives are to study the transition in mineralogy and microbiology as active hydrothermal sulfides transition to inactive.  we will do this through a combination of collecting exposure experiments set out in March 2019, currently sitting judst outside the axial valley on bare basement ~75 m from Bio9 or down near Q vent as well as collecting already inactive sulfides for comparison to the exposure experiments.  we will also collect seafloor basalts for microbiology analysis.  for the Mullineaux group, she will be collecting larval experiments previously deployed as part of an ongoing experiment by her lab and potentially collecting other animals as well.  for the Fornari group, they will be using Sentry at night to map the region down to 9.45N.

Science Activities

12 Alvin dives are planned.  we will be collecting inactive vent sulfides, seafloor exposure chambers for both Mullineaux and Sylvan - different experiments but for both picking up previously deployed experiments), collevcting seafloor basalts (on a few dives, this is a secondary objective), potentially collecting Major samples of hot fluids and possibly diffuse fluids when swapping out temperature loggers (Fornari), and using Sentry in the evenings.
