Science Objectives

Obtain oceanic measurements from the North Atlantic storm track.  The experiment aims at better understanding the generation, propagation and dissipation of internal waves in the near-inertial frequency spectrum and their interaction with meso- and submesoscale features in order to refine forecasting of upper-ocean shear.

Science Activities

We will be recovering three full-depth subsurface moorings comprised of syntactic foam floatation, current meters, temperature, salinity and conductivity sensors, and acoustic releases. These moorings are all in approximately 2900m water (locations listed in station information below).

We will also deploy a variety of lagrangian drifters, floats (EM-APEX), autonomous vehicles (Slocum and micorstructure gliders, Seagliders), and wave buoys. Finally, we will use shipboard sampling sytems (FastCTD and Lowered ADCP on CTD rosette) to sample velocity shear and turbulence in the upper ocean.

Scientific Instrumentation for R/V Armstrong

- added We have also requested the TSE Spooler from the winch pool and prefer no divider on the drum if possible.
We are requesting to use the shipboard system to ping our releases once the moorings are deployed if possible. Otherwise, we have our own deckset which we can also use.
We are also requesting the use of the full LADCP equipment set offered by WHOI (batteries, downlooking 150, uplooking 300, a spare, clamps, etc.).

on Mar 11, 2020 5:40 PM by Sarah Fuller
- added Our group uses a task management tool called Hive that is somewhat crucial to our operations in the case of instrument failure. We are not sure how this new platform will perform on low bandwidth. If at all possible, increased bandwidth wouild be ideal. We can discuss this in more detail during the pre-cruise meeting. on Mar 11, 2020 5:40 PM by Sarah Fuller
