Questions

This page will have two sections:

1) Questions sent via e-mail. I can't guarantee to provide the answer to every question, but I can provide answers to the best of my knowledge (along with asking around on the ship).

2) Some questions (and answers) from Ben Walther and Carly Strasser's "Atlantis Jeopardy."

Questions sent via e-mail

1) How does the sub communicate with the Atlantis?

Answer: An underwater phone.

2) How cold does the interior of the Alvin get and what is the outside temperature? Is the cabin well-insulated from the water? How is it insulated?

Answer: 2 degrees C. The interior gets as cold as 13 degrees C (8 hours on the bottom). It is not well-insulated. The cabin is essentially a titanium sphere. There is some padding on the sides and floor, but that's about it.

3) How is Alvin powered? How long do the batteries last and how are they recharged?

Answer: Battery powered. The batteries usually last around 6 hours on the bottom (depending on the amount of electronics being used) are recharged after every dive by the ship's power supply.

4) How does an underwater phone work?

Answer: Very much like a radio. An FM carrier frequency is sent out from a transmitter, the Alvin group uses ~8 KHz, overlaid with acoustic waves. The receiver recognizes the carrier wave, basically "subtracts" it, and you're left with the acoustic waves from the person on the transmitter end.
