Arctic Collaboration

A tow sled with air guns is lifted from its cradle for deployment from the Canadian icebreaker Louis S. St-Laurent during the Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project in 2006. Scientists from the U.S., Canada, and Japan are spending every summer between 2003 and 2008 aboard the icebreaker studying the gyre, a slowly swirling bowl of icy water north of Alaska ten times the size of Lake Michigan.
