September 23, 2018

Margaret Tivey, vice president for academic programs & dean of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, presents Lt. Ryan Conway with the 2018 Richard F. Pittenger Award. It is given annually to a U.S. naval officer in the Joint Program. It honors Pittenger, the institution’s former vice president of marine operations, who is a strong advocate for science and engineering education for naval officers. He retired in 2004 after 14 years at WHOI and 32 years in the Navy, including a tour as Oceanographer of the Navy. Lt. Conway is studying methods to detect, localize, and adaptively track acoustic sources in the ocean using multiple surface vehicles. (Photo Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
