A Well-traveled Hat

The ocean gained a powerful voice recently when Peter Thomson was appointed by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to be the first special envoy for the oceans. In his previous position as President of the U.N. General Assembly, Thomson, shown here in Alicante, Spain, where he attended the Ocean Summit, placed a special emphasis on “reversing the cycle of decline into which the ocean has been placed by accumulated human behavior.” In just the past two weeks, his new mandate has taken him to Malta, New York, Spain, and London—and he was elected a member of WHOI’s Board of Trustees.
