A representative of the Office of Naval Research formally transferred operation of the newly built research vessel Neil Armstrong to WHOI at a signing ceremony in the offices of Dakota Creek Industries where the ship was built. The ship is designed to remain at sea for up to 40 days with a crew of 20 and science party of 24 and replaces the recently retired R/V Knorr. The Armstrong is currently on its way to a shipyard on the East Coast where it will have its science mission equipment installed and conduct a series of cruises to test its ability to support ocean-going research.(Photo by Karla DeCamp, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
