Ocean scientists often need to be more than “just” an expert in his or her field of study. While loading the research vessel Cabo de Hornos in Valparaiso, Chile, recently, a WHOI team led by oceanographer Bob Weller found themselves in need of a welder to tack together a 9,000-pound mooring anchor. When none was available, Weller stepped in to finish the job, permitting the group to successfully complete the fourteenth deployment of the Stratus Ocean Reference Station, a long-term observatory that measures surface temperature, air-sea interactions, ocean currents, ocean temperature, salinity, and oxygen in the eastern Tropical Pacific.(Photo by Sean Whelan, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
