Heady on Healy

This heady view of the Chuchki Sea comes from aboard the US Coast Guard cutter Healy, which hosted scientists aboard the Arctic Spring research cruise in 2014. Among other science objectives, WHOI physical oceanographers spent the mission gathering data on the currents that flow through this Gateway to the Arctic, and how that impacts the flow of nutrients from the Pacific to Arctic oceans. After clearing the Bering Strait, the icebreaker headed north in a race against the flow of nutrients that signal an under-ice phytoplankton bloom.(Photo by Amanda Kowalski, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
