Squid Under Stress?

Squid Under Stress?

October 9, 2014

Squid are at the heart of the ocean food web. Many other animals depend on squid for sustenance, including fish, whales, walruses, seabirds, and people. The squid fishery in California alone is worth about $100 million annually. So it is important to know if squid are vulnerable to changing ocean conditions. WHOI biologist Aran Mooney and Casey Zakroff, a graduate student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, are investigating the potential impacts on squid larvae and eggs by ocean acidification caused by the ocean absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.(Video still by Daniel Cojanu, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
