Into the Gut
September 13, 2013WHOI scientist Peter Traykovski (kneeling) and summer student fellow Sara Goheen test a custom-built autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) in the strong currents of the gut off Devil’s Foot Island in Woods Hole. The “JetYak” ASV was designed to carry a flexible payload, including instruments to conduct seafloor surveys and make surface measurements in places that would be difficult or impractical to operate underwater vehicles. Another JetYak was recently used by Fiamma Straneo and Hanu Singh to work near the calving front of a glacier in Greenland.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
