New Kid on the Dock

New Kid on the Dock

September 27, 2010

The NOAA research ship Henry B. Bigelow arrived at the WHOI dock on Thursday, the vessel’s first call in its new homeport, Woods Hole. Named after WHOI’s founding director and a long contributor to oceanographic research in the Northeast, the Bigelow is the newest vessel to be assigned to the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center and one of the latest additions to the NOAA fleet of Fisheries Survey Vessels. It supports NOAA’s mission to protect, restore and manage the use of living marine, coastal, and ocean resources and also observes and monitors environmental conditions, conducts habitat assessments, and surveys marine mammal and marine bird populations from Maine to North Carolina.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
