Azure pools of summer

April 8, 2010

The Arctic, a crucial part of Earth’s ocean and atmospheric systems, is experiencing rapid warming, and WHOI scientists are studying the region and its interactions with the global ocean and climate. On a 2002 expedition to the Arctic Ocean co-led by WHOI physical oceanographer Bob Pickart, research associate Chris Linder took photos capturing both the science and the beauty of sea and shifting ice. The Arctic summer sun leaves startlingly blue pools of meltwater atop ice floes, themselves drifting on the sea surface.
