Tradition and new beginnings

June 4, 2009

Tassel and hood! The MIT-WHOI Joint Program‘s 2009 Ph.D. candidates will be hooded (the academic hoods’ colors and fabrics signifying the degree and field of study) in a ceremony June 4th at MIT. Since 1968 MIT and WHOI have operated this unique ocean science graduate program, combining both institutions’ strengths and awarding a dual degree. In a 2004 assessment of the program, the review committee concluded: “The MIT/WHOI Joint Program remains a (if not the) top educational program covering all the marine sciences and engineering.” (Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
