Departure: Aug 28, 2014

Astoria

Arrival: Sep 11, 2014

Astoria

Operations Area

Juan de Fuca Ridge and its flanks
Lat/Lon: 44° 45.0′ N / 131° 0.0′ W
Depth Range: 2200 / 3200
Will the vessel be operating within 200 NM of a foreign country? Canada, possibly.
Are visas or special travel documents required? no

Science Objectives

Our aim is to obtain as many and as deep jumbo piston cores as possible to investigate the potential temporal variability of hydrothermal activity on the Juan de Fuca Ridge.  COring sites are currently planned to be west of the Juan de Fuca ridge axis.  We will also try to obtain high resolution multibeam bathymetry out to a crustal age of 2 million years (~40 miles off-axis from the ridge).

Science Activities

Jumbo piston coring, box cores, multibeam mapping, possibly some wax coring on the axis of the Juan de Fuca.

Additional Information

Is night time work anticipated on this cruise?yesSpecialized tech support (Seabeam, coring, other):
We will be Seabeam support as we will be generating high resolution seabeam maps.  The cruise is primarily a coring cruise, but if coring needs a break, we would potential dredge, rock core, and map.Other required equipment and special needs:
We will need wax coring capability.  There is a wax core stand at WHOI, and should be the necessary modified gravity cores as well.
