A Growing Concern

High school student Ryan Pettit (Falmouth Academy) loads a coral sample into a scanning electron microscope at the Marine Biological Laboratory, with supervision from WHOI climate scientist Anne Cohen. Pettit is examining the effects of ocean acidification on skeletal growth. Each year, dozens of Woods Hole researchers work with New England students on science fairs and other research projects; some of those projects will be on display on April 29 during the annual Oceans Alive public science program.
