Celebrating a new university

September 23, 2009

Today is the inauguration of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) — a new world-class, graduate-level scientific research university. KAUST has an agreement with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to collaborate on marine research projects in the Red Sea. One of the projects led by WHOI biologist Jesús Pineda hopes to better understand the distribution and abundance of benthic organisms.  This species of giant clam, Tridacna, lives in shallow waters of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, and is one of the most threatened by over-harvesting.
