Changing Arctic

March 20, 2016

WHOI biologist Cabell Davis served as principal scientist on the Elysium Artists for the Arctic Expedition in fall 2015 led by Michael Aw of the Explorers Club to raise public awareness about the warming Arctic. Marin life artist Wyland drew the polar bear outline pictured here on an ice floe at 81.50°N using coffee grounds for nose and claws. Davis used a Video Plankton Recorder together with net sampling to study the penetration of Atlantic plankton species into the Arctic. Plankton play a major role in the ocean food web and carbon cycle.
