In 1968, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announced the creation of a joint program for graduate studies in oceanography. Today, the marriage is still going strong. The first commencement for the new program occurred in Woods Hole in 1970 (the 1980 commencement is shown here). In June 2008, the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering awarded its 800th degree. (Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
