Leaders Then and Now

Leaders Then and Now

December 13, 2015

Bostwick H. “Buck” Ketchum is pictured working in jacket and tie aboard WHOI’s original Atlantis  in the mid-1950s. Ketchum was an early leader in developing the field of biological oceanography and his work formed the basis for understanding ocean productivity and called attention to human effects on the coastal zone. In his honor WHOI gives the Ketchum Award to scientists who provide leadership, show innovation in coastal research, and link coastal science and societal issues. In 2015, coastal oceanographer Candace Oviatt of the University of Rhode Island received the Ketchum Award.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
