Line Across the Denmark Strait

February 9, 2012

A team from R/V Knorr prepares to deploy a mooring in the Denmark Strait in August 2011. The instruments on the mooring will help measure water flowing through the strait deep beneath the surface for one year. A recently discovered flow of water called the North Icelandic Jet is believed to contribute to ocean circulation in the North Atlantic that helps regulate climate in North America and Europe. A team led by WHOI physical oceanographer Robert Pickart will return to the Denmark Strait in 2012 to retrieve the moorings and conduct additional surveys in the area.
