WHOI research specialist Frank Bahr (left) and R/V Tioga first mate Ian Hanley recover a storm buoy from Buzzards Bay last November. Engineers at the University of Maine designed the buoy to survive high winds and rough seas in order to gather valuable data about storm surges in the bay and nearby tidal inlets. The buoy was part of the TEMPESTS program, a multi-institutional effort to better understand how storm intensity changes over the ocean. The program included new technology and a regional coordinated response to gather data from the open ocean to near-shore waters of the Northeast.
