More than Skin Deep

WHOI’s Aran Mooney (left) and Julie Arruda (middle) and Iliana Ruiz-Cooley (right) from NOAA’s Protected Resource Division in San Diego prepare a Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) for a a CT scan at the Institution’s Computerized Scanning and Imaging (CSI) Facility. Dr. Ruiz-Cooley brought the specimen to Woods Hole last March 2011 to scan and dissect it with the help of Mooney and Darlene Ketten in order to investigate the animal’s sensory system anatomy. The CSI Facility routinely helps marine scientists study a wide range of animals and objects, from corals and whole dolphins to mooring cables and deep sea cores.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
