A manipulator arm of the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason inserts a push core into seafloor sediment off the coast of Monterey, Calif. WHOI geobiologist Joan Bernhard collected the samples to study tiny shelled animals called foraminifera living there. Bernhard and Jason will team up again when they journey to the Mediterranean Sea to explore the microbial life of Deep Hypersaline Anoxic Basins, which are some of the most extreme environments on Earth. Follow the cruise progress with daily updates at Dive and Discover from Nov. 28-Dec. 9.
