Seas in Motion

August 24, 2008

Colored arrows show two of the major current systems flowing through the North Atlantic, with red representing the warm surface waters of the Gulf Stream, North Atlantic Current, and associated flows, and blue roughly representing the cooler, bottom-flowing Deep Western Boundary Current. The WHOI-led Line W project has been observing the limbs of both currents, in conjunction with the British-led RAPID Climate Change Programme and the international Arctic and Subarctic Ocean Fluxes (ASOF) Study.
