Smooth Sailing

Sunny skies and calm seas eased R/V Knorr’s transit through the 60-mile-long Prince Christian Sound during a cruise to sample currents off the coast of Greenland this summer. The sound is located at the southern end of the island and is only 1,500 feet wide in places. A team of WHOI scientists, including physical oceanographers Bob Pickart, Amy Bower, and Fiamma Straneo, are studying the subpolar North Atlantic as part of the five-year, international Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP). The program aims to construct a continuous record of the properties of currents in the region in an effort to understand how currents interact with global climate.(Photo by Carolina Nobre, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
