Surface Fleet

August 14, 2013

Version 2 of the autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) “JetYak” went to New York City in June, as the original was headed to Greenland. Both vehicles perform preprogrammed missions that include making measurements of the water surface and seafloor. In New York Harbor, a team led by WHOI scientist Peter Traykovski used JetYak to study how barges and other floating structures influence sediment transport and deposition. In Greenland, Fiamma Straneo will send another close to the calving front of a glacier to record conditions in the nearby fjord.(Photo by Dave Ralston, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
