Taking the Bus Home from School

December 14, 2007

Exhuasted from two days of survival camp, researchers and explorers ride slowly back to Antarctica’s McMurdo Station in an oversized transport vehicle. Each person was required to learn to build shelters out of ice, to share tents with strangers, to hauled sledges, and to walk around wearing plastic buckets on their heads. It was a body of knowledge collected over the decades since Roald Amundsen and his team first reached the South Pole on this date in 1911.
