The Weddell Waddle

Scientists working in Antarctica on sea ice in the Weddell Sea are frequently visited by penguins. These were checking up on WHOI Associate Scientist Hanu Singh and his team—Clay Kunz, Chris Murphy, Derya Akkaynak and Jeff Pietro—who are currently in the Southern Ocean with a British Antarctic Survey expedition on the RRS James Clark Ross to map  sea-ice thickness from below using the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) SeaBED and also from above using a 3D laser scanner. The WHOI team will be at sea until early December, making their way into the Bellingshausen Sea.(Photo by Derya Akkaynak Yellin, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
