Up, Up, and Away

Up, Up, and Away

October 25, 2010

After deploying an Arctic Ocean flux buoy and wind-driven generator, crew members from the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent prepare to return the instrument crate back to the ship. The flux buoy is one component of an ice-based observatory researchers set up in October, 2010, to monitor currents, salinity, and temperature of water masses in the Arctic. The observatory is part of a collaborative effort involving scientists from WHOI, the U.S. Army CCREL (Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory), and the Naval Postgraduate School.
