A Yo-Yo of an Instrument

A Yo-Yo of an Instrument

December 16, 2016

Brian Hogue (left) and Ben Pietro deploy a moored profiler from R/V Atlantis during a 2010 cruise led by WHOI physical oceanographer John Toole. The instruments travel up and down a mooring cable taking continuous measurements of water speed, direction, temperature, salinity, and other factors. As interest in the need to understand the impacts of global climate change grows, so too does the need for long records of ocean variability. High-resolution data collected over months and years are critical for refining climate models to incoorporate ocean processes and air-sea interactions.(Photo by John Toole, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
