You’ve Never Had a Math Class Like This

July 12, 2007

On a typical summer morning in the village of Woods Hole, participants in the annual Geophysical Fluid Dynamics summer program gather on the porch of Walsh Cottage to discuss complex theories of how water moves in the sea. The program was launched in 1959 with the aim of introducing a then-new topic in mathematical physics to graduate students in physical sciences. Five decades later, the math is still hard, and the company is still good. (Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
