Mathieu Dever, Physical Oceanography

Mathieu Dever grew up in the landlocked town of Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, in the suburbs of Paris. As a child, he spent most of his holidays on the French coast of Brittany, screaming and crying every time his parents would try to bring him close to the ocean. With age came maturity and common sense, and Dever realized that the ocean can be quite amazing in its ever-changing nature. Based on his strongest topic in school—physics—Dever decided his career path by Googling “list of jobs in physics by the ocean.” Physical oceanographer was the first result (which seems obvious now!), and his career trajectory was launched. He is now a postdoctoral scientist at WHOI. When not in the office or on a research vessel, Dever spends most of his time practicing any type of outdoor physical activity, including soccer, running, surfing, and sailing. He also enjoys spending time trying to convince his lovely wife how cool the ocean is.
