Maya Yamato first came to the WHOI CSI lab as an undergraduate Minority Fellow in 2005. She returned in 2006 as a Summer Student Fellow and entered the Joint Program in 2007, working with her Ph.D. advisor Darlene Ketten. Yamato earned her bachelor’s degree in ecology and evolutionary biology with a certificate of proficiency in the Japanese language at Princeton University. When whale heads are not available, she can be found rock climbing, running along the beach, surfing, or exploring Cape Cod. Her mentor for this article was Hugh Powell, science writer at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
