Whales and other animals can get entangled in long ropes connecting lobster traps to surface floats, often with serious, and at times fatal, consequences.

The “on-call” buoy eliminates dangerous vertical lines by coiling them around a buoyant spool attached to an anchor.
To retrieve their traps, lobstermen trigger the “on-call” buoy with a timer or acoustic signal to detach from the anchor, unspool its line, and float up to the surface.
