I would like to come into the classroom and present the following concept/activity:
1.biology of hydrothermal vents - colonization, succession, larval migration

2. biology of seamount coral ecosystems - diversity, endemic species, susceptibility to disturbance

either presentation can include information about sampling methods (submersible, remotely operated vehicles (ROV's), autonomous sampling)

3. doing science at sea

I can present this at a level appropriate for (choose one or more):
Grades 3-5 (ages 8-11)

I would categorize this science as (choose one or more):
Biology
Technology and Engineering

relevant "learning standards" or "broad concepts":
7. Give examples of how changes in the environment (drought, cold) have caused some plants and animals to die or move to new locations (migration).

How much classroom time will your presentation/activity require?:
30-45 minutes, depending on content
