WHOI Biology Seminar: Kristina Kvile
WHOI Biology Seminar: Kristina Kvile
Kristina Kvile Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Oslo Climate and zooplankton: Effects on timing, spatial distributions and life history strategies Understanding how climate change influences marine ecosystems is the most urgent challenge facing marine ecologists today. Due to their short, pelagic life cycle, zooplankton respond rapidly to environmental variation and are useful indicators of climate change.…

Amy Maas Assistant Scientist, Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences Refining our Understanding of Zooplankton Contributions to Biogeochemistry Many zooplankton and nekton make daily migrations below the ocean’s euphotic zone and mixed layer. In the darkness of the “twilight zone” they respire and excrete, releasing surfaced derived CO2 and waste products into the midwater. Globally, these…

Spirit of Discovery – Peanut Butter Club
A quarter of a million “flying” Devil Rays shouldn’t be hard to find. But Dr. Walter Munk and company are two days into their expedition, and with three science boats, an ultralight airplane, and radio reports coming in from every fisherman in Baja, they can’t still find a single ray.

Library of Things
Library of Things
The library has purchased a new addition for its “Library of Things,” its group of useful objects and tools available for loan to their patrons. Along with the sewing machine, the ukulele and guitar, the grain grinder, the serger, pickleball set, the yarn swift, and other things, the library now has a telescope for loan. The telescope is a “4.5” Orion StarBlast prepared for the library by the Aldrich Astronomical Society of Paxton, Massachusetts. In order to borrow the telescope, borrowers must be over 18 years old and have a current Falmouth (or Woods Hole, East Falmouth, West Falmouth, or North Falmouth) library card, and come to the library in person to pick it up. Before people borrow the telescope, librarians will give them a quick lesson in how to use the equipment. On Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m., there will be an official dedication of the telescope, which will include a Power Point presentation on its use by John Root of Paxton and the Astronomical Society. People are welcomed in to see the telescope and be introduced to its use, and celebrate with the library on its new addition.

The library will welcomes poet Milly White
Milly White will read from her recent book ”Spirit’s Spark, Stories and Musings in Poems.” Ms. White has retired to Davisville after a career in nursing in New Jersey. Only recently has she become used to being a poet. Since 2017, she has found poems suddenly appearing in her mind, then tumbling onto her pages. With strong support from her family, a dedicated group of friends, and closely bonded writing group, she has taken the plunge into printing and publishing this volume; she will humbly and bravely present it to us, the public, at the library event.
