WHOI Elects Trustees at Fall Meeting of the Corporation

Three new Trustees were elected at the recent Joint Meeting of the Board of Trustees and Corporation at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Peter Aron of New York, Joseph McNay of Chestnut Hill, MA, and Joseph Patton of Boston, currently serving as Members of the Institution’s Corporation, were elected Trustees during the fall meetings in October in Woods Hole.
Joseph F. Patton, Jr. was elected a Member of the Corporation in 2001 with a term ending in 2004, while Peter Aron and Joseph McNay were elected in 2002 with terms ending in 2005. All will now serve until 2006. Members are elected initially for a term of three years and are eligible for re-election to six-year terms. Trustees serve four-year terms and are eligible for re-election.
Joseph F. Patton, Jr. of Boston, MA, is Managing Director of Longwood Investment Advisors and previously held the positions of Senior Vice President, Investments at Paine Webber and as Managing Director of the Capital Markets Group. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Rhode Island and serves as Vice Chairman of the Board, Finance and Investment Committees, for the Brimmer and May School and is a fundraiser for inner city schools. He currently serves on the Institution’s Nominating Committee.
Peter A. Aron of New York City is President of J. Aron Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Vice President of Lafayette Enterprises, Inc., a privately-held asset management firm in New York. He previously served as Assistant Vice President of J. Aron & Company, Inc., a division of Goldman Sachs. A native of Memphis, TN, he received his bachelor’s degree in English from Tulane University, which honored him in 2000 with its Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Avon Old Farms School in Avon, CT, and is a Trustee of the South Street Seaport Museum, where he is also Chairman Emeritas and serves as President of the South Street Seaport Museum Foundation. He is also a trustee of Lenox Hill Hospital, the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and the Asia Society, and is a member of the Board of Governors of Tulane University Medical Center and the Board of Administrators of Tulane University, the Trustee’s Council for the Society for the Preservation of Long Island, and the Advisory Council for the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation. He has been affiliated with the Institution for many years and has been an Associate since 1981.
Joseph C. McNay is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Senior Principal of Essex Investment Management Company in Boston. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and an MBA degree from the Wharton School of Finance. He previously worked as Executive Vice President and Director of Endowment Management and Research and as Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager of the Massachusetts Company. He is a trustee of The New England Foundation, National Public Radio, Simmons College, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital in Boston. He also serves as a Director of Network Plus, a telecommunications company providing voice and data services to businesses, the Pioneer Institute, and Tenacity, a youth development program. He is Chairman of the Nathan Hale Associate program at Yale University and serves on the advisory board for the International Center for Finance at Yale and of the Undergraduate Executive Advisory Board of the Wharton School of Finance.
In addition to business meetings at the Institution, Members and Trustees heard presentations from a number of staff members while in Woods Hole. Among them was an overview of the Institution’s Deep Ocean Exploration Institute by Senior Scientist and Institute Director Susan Humphris, who also gave a presentation on some recent problems in vent biology. Associate Scientist Dana Yoerger of the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department spoke about developments with the new remotely operated vehicle JASON II and the autonomous underwater vehicle ABE, or Autonomous Benthic Explorer
The Institution’s 36 Trustees and additional Honorary Trustees meet three times a year, in January, May and October. The 120 Members and additional Honorary Members meet in Woods Hole in May and October.
