Glider Entry

December 28, 2017

A Spray glider enters the water off the coast of Miami in September 2017, days before the arrival of Hurricane Irma. The glider flew back and forth across the current as it was carried northeast, as part of an ongoing project led by physical oceanographer Robert Todd to study the structure and dynamics of the Gulf Stream along the U.S. East Coast. The glider measured temperature, salinity, currents, and other characteristics during the height of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season and contributed to a growing, multiyear database of detailed Gulf Stream measurements.
