A Whale Trail

June 27, 2006

Three marine research laboratories in Woods Hole have teamed up to sponsor a six-foot right whale sculpture,  one of more than 50 whale sculptures that are part of this summer’s Whale Trail, a free public art event on Cape Cod and the Islands. The Whale Trail will raise money for non-profit organizations while showcasing local artistic talent. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI),  the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and NOAA/Woods Hole Science Aquarium sponsored the sculpture,  which depicts a right whale above the water line, with marine organisms of the Atlantic Ocean below the water line.  The whale will be on exhibit in Woods Hole through September, when bids are taken for the right to “adopt” each whale. Proceeds from the sale of the Woods Hole whale will benefit reconstruction of the seal pool at the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, the oldest public research aquarium in the country.
