Wind Report

WHOI physical oceanographer Anthony Kirincich (right) shows local NPR reporter Brian Morris data from an instrument that uses lasers to measure wind speeds. The instrument, called a Wind Cube, is about the size and shape of a portable refrigerator and can make highly accurate wind speed measurements 10,000 times per second, from 30 to 700 feet above the ground. Earlier this month, the Wind Cube was deployed at the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory as part of a Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) multi-year effort to gather baseline data to guide plans for local offshore wind development.
