Holed Up

January 8, 2019

As part of his Semester at WHOI (SAW) working with WHOI scientist Joel Llopiz’s lab, Matt Stefanak, a senior at Middlebury College, collected fish larvae in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. His work was part of the NSF-funded Choral Chorus project led by Llopiz and WHOI biologists Aran Mooney and Amy Apprill. The project, which aims to understand the role underwater sounds play in coral reef health, provided Stefanak with an opportunity to snorkel through unique environments like Hurricane Hole (shown here), where a large diversity of corals grow among mangroves. WHOI is currently accepting applications for the 2019 SAW session. (Photo by Paul Caiger, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
