Women at Work

September 30, 2016

MIT-WHOI Joint Program student Sophie Chu (right) and research assistant Kate Morkeski prepare to measure the movement of dissolved inorganic carbon in a Waquoit Bay salt marsh. In additional to working on her doctorate, Chu chairs the steering committee of the Society for Women in Marine Science (SWMS), which is having its annual symposium at WHOI today. Chu helped create SWMS in 2014 to build a peer network for female marine scientists and to highlight the difficulties facing women and minorities pursuing marine science careers. According to a 2014 analysis of major U.S. oceanography programs, women earn almost half of oceanography doctoral degrees but hold only 15 percent of senior faculty positions.
