Giant Leaps

Giant Leaps

July 20, 2016

Forty-seven years ago today, the astronaut Neil Armstrong took his “one giant leap for mankind” and became the first person to walk on the moon. Many people remember exactly where they were when it happened. Fifteen weeks ago today, the new research vessel Neil Armstrong, named after the space explorer, sailed into Woods Hole, Mass., for the first time. The ship was greeted with cheers from a crowd of well-wishers, who bundled up on chilly but sunny day to see the Neil Armstrong arrive at the WHOI pier, and who, decades on, will likely remember the day.(Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
